On Wednesday Chancellor George Osborne announced a new 'Sugar tax' on the drinks industry, expeceted to raise £520m it will be used to double Primary School sport fundng from September 2017 in efforts to fight the childhood obesity epidemic. Since 2013 Primary Schools have benefitted from ringfenced 'PE and Sport Premium' funding of £150m, as part of the 'Inspire a generation' legacy from London 2012 the funding's main aim is to upskill primary school teachers in PE and provide additional sport opportunities for children at school.

Children's physical inactivity is a major concern in the UK at present, half of children aged 7 fail to meet the 60 minutes of daily physical activity recommended by the Chief Medical Officer, with a direct and indirect cost of £20bn a year to the UK economy. The news from the budget is long overdue, Planet Education as founding members of 'UKactive Kids' have long been campaigning for more focus on the need to tackle childrens inactivity, this news comes on the back of the 'UKactive' Generation Inactive report in Summer 2015.

Planet Education welcomes this news from the budget, but we also believe this only represents the start and much more action is needed if we are to improve our childrens health and wellbeing. Through our work in our schools and with organisations like 'UKactive Kids' we will continue to be at the fore of this drive to fight childhood obesity.
